Centerless grinding process is similar to the other centered grinding operations except that there is no spindle involved in the machining process. This allows high through-put since parts can be quickly inserted and removed from the process. The work piece is not mechanically constrained in centreless grinding as the work piece rotates between a high speed grinding wheel and a slower speed regulating drive wheel. The work is supported from below by a fixed work-rest blade and also on its outer diameter by the regulating wheel. As the work piece is supported only by the regulating wheel and the blade, centerless grinding is a more rigid system which provides the advantage of performing more accurate and efficient grinding when compared to grinding between centers.

Grinding without a spindle allows fast production output

    Infeed & Thru-feed Centerless Grinding

The two basic modes of centerless grinding are "thru-feed" and "in-feed" or "plunge" mode. In the thru-feed mode, the work proceeds in the axial direction through the slowly narrowing gap between the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel. Work is advanced by the axial force exerted on it by the rotating surface of the regulating wheel. This is a highly productive form of grinding in that a number of work pieces can be ground simultaneously and in a continuous stream. The infeed mode is used for work with projecting heads that would prohibit thru-feeding, the work is placed on the work-rest blade while one wheel is retracted and fed to an end stop. The wheel is then brought back, reducing the gap between the wheels, grinding the work. Setting up for infeed grinding is the less complicated of the two methods but for continuous, production type centerless grinding, the thrufeed method is the most effective as often a single pass is sufficient enough to finish the operation.

    Application of Centerless Grinding Machines

A centerless grinding machine, or centerless grinder, can be found in many traditional factories which involve high volume production runs. Centerless grinders have been successfully applied to manufacture a variety of parts ranging from hypodermic needles to bowling balls. The principles of the centerless grinding process remain the same regardless of the work piece to be ground. Centreless grinding machines, including CNC centerless grinding machine, have got widespread applications in various industries like auto parts manufacturing, bearing industry, bush and pin manufacturing.
