    The structure of a belt grinder

    The basic construction of a belt grinder is a wide grinding belt, which is fixed between two rollers. One of the two rollers is powered, and the other roller creates the tension needed to prevent the grinding belt from slipping. The belt can be replaced, if all tension is released. Belt grinders with a particularly narrow grinding belt are called a band file. Hand-held belt grinding machines are equipped with a handle and a knob, in order to ensure a two-handed operation. They are either available with a power cable, or are battery-operated. All established manufacturers of power tools have a range of belt grinders in their product range.

    Stationary belt grinders guide the workpiece over the grinding point. This can be very advantageous, depending on the design and type of work. This method can process small and light workpieces more precisely, than if they were clamped in and processed using a hand-held belt grinder. They are made out of a table with an attached belt grinder. Alternatively, the table grinder is tightly screwed onto the work top.

    Particularly large types of belt grinders are the so-called long belt grinders. These are used to process workpieces with large surfaces. Grinding machines are used for de-rusting, deburring and preparingheavy metal components so that they can be further processed. These stationary machines are only used in specific industries, and are hardly available as used machines.

    Belt grinders are used for wood, plastic and metalworking. The quality of the grinding results depends on the limitations of the machine and the grinding tool. Therefore, it is important to check the material and the graininess of the grinding belt, to see if they fit the task. Belt grinders have a high torque, which is why very course belts remove a high amount of material. Belt grinders are preferably used to process solid materials. Removing old layers of colour, milling deburred or burnt metal pieces, or roughening metal or plastic panels are some of the most common uses of a belt grinder.
