Deep hole drilling machines are machines tools that drill precise holes into massive metal blocks or particularly long solid bars. Deep hole drills can be up to 50 metres long.

What is the structure of a deep hole drill?

A deep hole drilling machine is very similar to a lathe. The difference is that the workpiece is fixed in place, while the tool (the drill) slowly rotates on the desired area where the hole is to be drilled. The drill is restricted by bezels. These bezels are adjustable, so that the drill can go as deep into the material as required. A deep hole drill machine has an internal cooling lubricant. The deep drill is equipped with a hollow channel, through which a large amount of cooling lubricant flows. If there was no coolant, the rubbing between the tip of the drill and the material would quickly lead to the drill seizing up. This would damage the drill and the workpiece. The cooling lubricant is also used to bring the metal chippings out of the hole. Without this, the drilling process would very quickly get blocked up. As an integral component to ensure that the machine continues to function reliably, cooling lubricant is required for deep hole drilling machines. Deep drills are available as small and mid-sized drills with hard metal tips, which are sharpened several times. Large deep drilling machines are equipped with one or several replaceable plates. Large deep hole drills can also be extended. Deep drills are available from diameters of just 0.8mm up to 1,800mm.

Where are deep hole drilling machines used?

Deep hole drilling machines and tools are used for special machine construction. The requirement of deep holes is usually needed for the production of hydraulic tubes in machines. Control blocks for hydraulically operated machines are, for example, made out of massive metal blocks with precise holes. A deep drilling machine is used by machine manufacturers themselves or contract manufacturers. Further uses of a hole drilling machine are for the production of hollow shafts and specialised bar material.
