JOHN DEERE 4020 Tractor Production History
The JOHN DEERE 4020 tractor was first introduced in 1963 as a replacement for the JOHN DEERE 4000 farm tractor. It was manufactured at John Deere’s Waterloo, Iowa factory in the United States. The tractor JOHN DEERE 4020 was also made in a second factory in Mexico. Nearly 185,000 units of the JOHN DEER 4020 were produced, including standard, row crop and high-crop versions. A wide-front variant of the tractor was also available. Production of the JD 4020 ceased in 1972 and the successful tractor was replaced by the JOHN DEERE 4320.
JOHN DEERE 4020 Specs
The 4020 JOHN DEERE tractor is fitted with a 6.6-litre, six-cylinder John Deere diesel engines. A 4020 JOHN DEERE for sale from original suppliers was also available with 5.6- and 5.9-litre, six-cylinder gasoline engines and a 5.9-litre, six-cylinder LP gas engine were also available. Oil capacity in earlier models is 8 quarts, although this increases to 12 in models made in 1969 and afterwards with the exception of high-crop diesel models. Fuel capacity ranges from 34 gallons or 128.7 litres for gasoline and LP gas versions to 45 gallons or 170.3 litres for diesel models. The tractor features Syncro-Range partially synchronised transmission with eight forward and two reverse gears. This requires tractors to be stopped with the clutch depressed in order to select one of four shift stations. With a shift station selected, operators can move between two forward gears when using the clutch.
Power Shift transmission is also found on these tractors and allows operators to shift between gears without the clutch. Other features include hydraulic power steering and hydraulic wet disc brakes. An optional rear differential lock is found on some 4020 tractors. The 4020 JOHN DEERE has an operating weigh between 8,645 pounds or 3,773 kilograms and 9,560 pounds or 4,191 depending on the configuration and type. The standard model has a wheelbase of 100.25 inches or 254 centimetres, while the wheelbase for the row crop version is 97.5 inches or 247 centimetres. The tractor is 151 inches or 383 centimetres long and 89.6 inches or 227 centimetres wide. The row-crop version is 77.9 inches or 197 centimetres high, while the standard version measures up to 88.75 inches or 225 centimetres high. A JOHN DEERE 4020 for sale in the 1960s and 1970s was also available with optional loader attachments.
