HERAEUS
The German firm HERAEUS specializes in the manufacture of products containing precious metals such as platinum. Its products appear in equipment such as photovoltaic cells and catalytic converters.
Innovating in precious metals manufacturing since 1851
The metal-working company HERAEUS was founded in 1851 by Wilhelm Carl Heraeus in the German city of Hanau and was initially a path-breaking platinum manufacturer. Innovation continued into the twentieth century, with the firm developing revolutionary techniques for creating quartz rock glass, and the development of vacuum smelting techniques during the 1920s. After the war, HERAEUS became a global company, with subsidiaries in the UK, Japan and the USA. It also expanded its areas of expertise to include dental and medical equipment, quartz glass, precious metals smelting, electro-lite sensors and speciality lighting. Nowadays, the company has 13,000 employees across the world, but remains family owned, allowing it to balance stability with the need to compete internationally. It partners with firms in a wide range of sectors, from medical organizations to the environment, communications and energy and consciously seeks to promote continual innovation in all of its product lines. Although HERAEUS remains anchored in Germany, it earns most of its revenue in Asia, a sign of how globally it operates. It also continues to break ground in many fields, including new UV light based malaria treatments and organic solar energy cells. This reflects the company's core principles, which include innovating in a sustainable manner, and focusing on staff development at all levels.
