Development of Surface Planing Machines

Surface Planing Process

The machine mainly consists of a support table, one more or more auxiliary stops, a cutter block with a cutting knife and an extraction system. The support table is used as the feed-in and output table. The workpiece is placed on the support table and guided along the cutter block, which is located in the middle. This part of the table is narrower than the removed component, because the wood will be pushed down by the auxiliary stop, and after the cutting knife has processed it, the workpiece will be flatter. In order to make sure that the wood on the support table doesn't hang down and remains straight, it is important that the table has a height difference. This height difference is determined by the size of material to be removed, and can be adjusted on the machine using a hand-wheel or switch.

On planers, the projection of the knife shaft over the surrounding cutter block is not allowed to be more than 1.1 mm. In order to ensure that the material doesn't slip during this process, the wood is pushed onto the table via the auxiliary stop on the machine. The workpiece is pushed towards the cutterblock either by hand, or the machine, at a speed of about 5-30 m/min. The cutting knife is located on the cutter block, which rotates and removes the uneven layer of wood workpiece, and moves the chips towards the extraction system. In order to protect against flying chips, or accidentally gripping the cutting knife, it is important to ensure that there is a cover. There are three different types of protective covers: clapper guard (attached by hinges); swing guard (swings to the side if there is a risk); and overhead guard (this most modern variation and permanently covers the cutterblock). The planed wood is then delivered over the support table. Normally, an orthogonally facing surface is processed along with another surface that is perpendicular to it, so that both surfaces are at a right angle to one another and run in a straight direction along both stops. After the wood has been planed several times, it can be further processed using a thicknesser.
