What is Welding, and what do Welding Machines do?

Welding is the standard process used to permanently join materials together, usually metal or thermoplastics. There are various systems available that all work around the same principle. At the welding spot, a workpiece is joined to metal edge using liquefied heat. Welding machines and mig welders are used to facilitate the joining of metals by coalescence. This involves applying intense heat to melt a portion of the metals to be joined so that they intermix. Often another material is added to form a stronger joint when cooled. The molten metals then flow into one another and solidify again. This creates a permanent bond between the two work pieces.

What are the different types of Welding Machines?

    • Arc Welding Machines.
Arc welding creates an electric arc between electrodes, a positive charge anode and a negative charge cathode, to create an intense heat. Metal arc welding systems are those in which the electrode is melted off to become a part of the weld.
    • Spot Welding Machines
A spot welding machine is used to join contacting metal surfaces together. This is done by means of a pair of shaped copper electrodes to focus the welding current in one particular spot whilst the two pieces of metal are clamped together. The heat generated by resistance to the electric current will melt the metal, and form a weld. Spot welding machines can deliver a large amount of energy in a short burst, so that there is little or no unnecessary heating of the rest of the sheet metal.
    • Portable Welding Machines
These are arguably the most popular type of welding machine. These compact units are convenient as they can be moved around easily, and are suitable for small businesses or private use.
